COP16

The 2024 United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity is the Sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity and the first since COP 15 in December 2022 in Montreal, Canada.

Date: October 21-November 1, 2024

Place: Cali, Columbia.

Biodiversity is the bedrock of life on Earth, underpinning our global economy, combating climate change, and sustaining the food systems that nourish the world.

Yet, we are witnessing an unprecedented crisis: habitats are vanishing, and up to a million species face extinction, threatening the lives and livelihoods of the billions of people who depend on them.

Gathering in one of the most biodiverse landscapes on the planet, governments, Indigenous leaders, the business community and civil society will discuss the challenges and opportunities we face to reverse habitat loss, protect endangered species and preserve the ecosystems on which all life depends.

The key objectives of biodiversity COP are:

  • Conservation of biological diversity
  • Sustainable use of nature’s components, and
  • The fair and equitable sharing of the benefits arising from commercial and other utilization of genetic resources.

These principles apply to all ecosystems, species and genetic resources.

This is going to be a great opportunity for one of the most biodiverse nations in the world. This event sends a message from Latin America to the world about the importance of climate action and the protection of life. It highlights the commitment of Colombia, of President Gustavo Petro and the entire country, to preserve our planet. Incoming President Susana Muhamad,
Minister of Environment of Columbia
