DROUGHT

Rain is now a fading memory

Inspired by the work of Pieter Bruegel

A drought occurs primarily when there is a lack of rain for an extended period of time.

As temperatures rise droughts will become more frequent and severe potentially causing food and water shortages, human health impacts, extinction, destructive wildfires, crop loss and conflicts between people competing for resources, primarily water.

Regions such as the U.S. Southwest, where droughts are expected to get more frequent, intense, and longer lasting, are at particular risk. Climate change increases the odds of worsening drought in many parts of the world.

This is occurring as 2023 is reported as the hottest year on record.

Pieter Bruegel the Elder (c. 1525-1569) was a painter and engraver from the Netherlands. Considered one of the most important artists of his time in Dutch and Flemish Renaissance painting, he was known for his landscapes and depictions of familiar village scenes. Bruegel’s work can be traced from his early landscapes, in which he depicted the seasons of the year, to his later works, which focused on the life of the peasants and their connection to the rhythms of the natural world.
