STATEMENT: Readout of the White House’s Meeting with Climate Finance Leaders

National Economic Council (NEC) Director Brian Deese, National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy, and senior Administration officials held a virtual meeting with leaders and advocates focused on climate-related financial risks. The Administration officials and group discussed the risks that climate change poses to our financial system – both in terms of the physical risks posed by of climate impacts like increasingly frequent and severe storms, droughts, and wildfires, as well as transition risks related to the global shift to a net-zero economy.

President Biden, Vice President Harris, and Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg met in the Oval Office with a bipartisan group of Members of Congress from the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee to discuss the critical need to invest in modern and sustainable American infrastructure, including strengthening and enhancing American roads, bridges, waterways, schools, housing, and more. The discussion follows a bipartisan meeting the Administration held with Senators on the Environment and Public Works Committee last month and it is part of ongoing engagements on infrastructure with Members of Congress and stakeholders.

National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy convened the first-ever National Climate Task Force meeting as outlined by President Biden’s January 27 executive order on tackling the climate crisis. The Task Force is chaired by the National Climate Advisor and includes Cabinet-level leaders from 21 federal agencies and senior White House officials to kickstart the Biden-Harris Administration’s implementation of a whole-of-government approach to tackling climate change, creating good-paying, union jobs, and achieving environmental justice.
